Cross Cultural Letterforms

Concept Project

Illustrator/ Photoshop

Objective

“This is a collaborative project between cultures to raise cross-cultural awareness. Bring an object from your ancestral heritage based on your research. Professor Archana Shekara will be sharing five objects from hers” Archana Shekara

Create letterforms that take inspiration from both objects.

Concept

The Claddagh Ring has its origins in Ireland and stands for love, loyalty, and friendship. These rings are often passed down within families for generations. The Jumki style earring has connections to royalty. Combining the beaded element of the earring with the hands on the Claddagh creates letterforms that symbolize being rich in familiar connections. The heightened baseline of the vowels calls back to designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh who was famous in Scotland and Ireland (both places in which I have ancestral ties) during the Art Nouveau movement.
