12-Hour Notice Campaign

Background

For over 10 years Student Government Association has been pushing for the town council to protect student renters from no-notice apartment showings that leave students in a vulnerable position with little to no privacy within their apartments.

On November 6, an ordinance was placed on the Normal Town Council agenda to require landlords to give a 12-hour notice before apartment showings. For the ordinance to get passed students needed to be present at the meeting and tell their stories.

Objective

Create posters, handouts, and social media graphics that have a consistent message and composition. The graphics should catch the eyes of students and clearly communicate why they should come to the town council meeting.

Concept

All of the graphics start with the question of “Off-Campus Student?” in a bold San Serif font that makes the intended audience clear. The color red directly ties to ISU, the college that our audience attends. The neon light effect demonstrates that the meeting will occur at night and in Uptown Normal where there are many iconic neon signs. The building in the poster is Uptown Station where the meeting will take place. It was very important that students were confident when coming into the space since many had not attended a Normal Town Council meeting. Showing the location visually made it more likely students would attend.

Due to the graphics and effort from senators, the meeting had record attendance. The ordinance was passed on November 6th, 9 p.m.
